"Rimzim Gire Sawan"

This was the mood that was set in on Sunday 27th July morning at Rtn. Keshav Kulkarni’s farmhouse at Yeoor Hills. The clouds were fully charged with thunderous rocking showers, the lush green environment was whispering “sulag sulag jaaye mann” in our minds rewinding us to our college days, trekking in the hills with “bheege aaj is mausam me” , raised the spirits and flared up our bellies to the extent to say “lagi kaisie ye agan!”

It started off with a mouth watering Misal-Paav and Batata Vadas for a breakfast. We flagged off our Tree Plantation drive by planting saplings of Gulmohar (Peacock flower - Delonix Regia Rafin) and Bahava(Indian Labernum - Cassia Fistula Linn) at the site. We shall now carry this Green drive at variuos other locations. We then left for a trek in the hills. Everyone was completely wet enjoying the showers and marching ahead. Kids were leading the parade. We returned after four hours with beauty of the nature embossed in our minds. Sumptuous lunch was waiting for us. It was raining cats and dogs, so everyone was out again to dance in the rains to the tune of Indian & Western music. Spirits were really high!!!

It was indeed a dream picnic for all of us. We expressed our sincere gratitude to Rtn. Keshav for nicely arranging the event by giving personal touch. He also got emotional and invited us again for yet another dream day. All good things come to an end. So we bid farewell and left for our mundane activities. Rain GOD was very kind enough to shower HIS blessings on us, throughout the day. It was very well attended by over 35 Rotarians, Anns and family members.

Rotary's Muslim Ulema Committee Committed towards Polio Eradication

Dear Rotary Leaders,

It gives me immense pleasure to share with you all the success of the Rotary’s Muslim Ulema Committee in making the Muslim population as much a beneficiary of the PolioPlus campaign as any the other populace in the country. At present Muslim children accounts for just 30% of the total number of children affected by Polio which earlier used to be 70%. In fact Rotary has been complimented by Partners and Experts on the success of the Mulsim Ulema Committee with suggestions for repeating this success in Bihar and other endemic countries as well.

Today due to the success of the Rotary Muslim Ulema Committee in the State of U.P., the Committee has been expanding its sphere of influence beyond by constituting such Committees in all the districts of the State in order to involve and enlist the support of Muslim clerics and scholars at the district levels too for a wider outreach. In this regard a meeting was organized by India National PolioPlus Committee for Ulemas from the seven districts of western U.P. - Bareilly, J.P. Nagar, Shajahanpur, Rampur, Badaun, Pilibhit and Moradabad - on July 19 in Moradabad. This was in continuation of the District chapters for U.P Muslim Ulema Committee that was successfully concluded in Ghaziabad in March and in Agra last month.

Around 60 Muslim religious leaders and scholars belonging to different Islamic sects from these districts attended the Meet. Along with four Muslim executive members of the Ulema Committee, I was joined at the meeting by INPPC Chairman Deepak Kapur, NCM Sudhir Gupta, DG 3100 Yogesh M. Gupta, Inner Wheel Chairman 310 Smt. Manju Gupta, DGN Rakesh Rastogi, NCM Ajay Saxena and Rotarians of RI
District 3100.

This meeting just as the previous two, lived up to our expectation and many revered Muslim clerics in the region turned up to discuss the importance of eradicating Polio from their population and their region. The ideas that could work at the local levels were deliberated upon and suggestions were made for consideration of the government for implementation so as to ensure the support of the marginalized sections. The level of support from the administration, Rotary and Partners in getting their efforts in eradication, which was crucial to the success of this Committee, was also discussed. Director, Maternal and Child Health, Govt. of U.P., Mr. S.K Jain and Additional Director, H & FW, Moradabad, Smt. Kalyani Gupta and Commissioner IAS Moradabad, Shri Umadhar Drivedi appreciated the role played by Ulema Committee and Rotary. Shri Drivedi said, “Moradabad was earlier known as the epicenter of Polio virus but today thanks to the strong efforts and advocacy of Rotary’s Muslim Ulema Committee, there are hardly any cases.”

All participating Ulemas when asked to put forth their views acknowledged and expressed their appreciation of Rotary’s and Senior Muslim Ulemas for carrying the noble effort of eradicating Polio disease from their community and the country. A participant, Janab Masud Hassan from Shajahanpur said “ In 60 years of independence there has been no programme like the Polio eradication campaign. Today we see dirty Politics everywhere but Polio programme is devoid of any politics and is only for the betterment of our children, our community .”

A press conference that followed the Meet and participated by almost all local dailies was well received. The event was covered by many electronic channels and also covered the next day in all the newspapers.

There are two more such District meetings planned for the districts in central U.P and northern U.P belt. And we are hopeful that they will be as successful and meet our expectations of making the minority community an equal participant in the Polio campaign.

We assure you all of INPPC’s sincere efforts and Ulema Committee’s commitment in achieving the goal of Polio eradication.

With warm regards,
Affectionately yours in Rotary,

Rotary India Award for Excellence in Humanitarian Service

Rotarians in India are a force for peace and friendship. They help others in so many ways. We are part of something large. Rotarians are obsessed with an ideal to make this world a better place to live. We understand that creating sustainable programmes requires us to network with other organisations and individuals who are actively engaged in doing good work. It is the basic principle of Rotary that we can do much more together than we could ever do alone and Rotary accords recognition to organisations and individuals who render humanitarian service.

This is being done through the Rotary India Award, a national event, which has gained tremendous popularity and prestige over the years. This unique Award was instituted in 1992 by the Rotary Awards for Service to Humanity (India) Trust, set up by prominent Rotarians in India under the stewardship of PRIP Rajendra K Saboo soon after he became the President of Rotary International in 1991. The founder members of this Trust include Mr. I.K.Gujral, former Prime Minister of India, PRID Sudarshan Agarwal, who has just retired as Governor of the State of Sikkim, PRID O.P. Vaish, and PDG G.H. Singhania. All the former Directors of Rotary International and the current Director are the Trustees. PRIP Raja Saboo was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees from its inception till 2007 when PRID O.P. Vaish was unanimously elected as the Chairman. Rotary India Award has been recognised by the RI Board of Directors as an important activity by Rotarians.

Rotary clubs contributed Rs.6,00,000 to the corpus of the trust. PRIP Raja Saboo increased the corpus to Rs.11,00,000 with his own contribution and support from friends. The Rotary Awards for Service to Humanity (India) Trust was formed in 1991. It was in fulfilment of Raja’s vision that the Rotary India Award took shape the following year to recognise social activists and institutions working at the grass root levels for the welfare of the masses.

Rotary India Award carries a Citation and a cheque for Rs.2,00,000 and is presented every year to an individual or an institution chosen by an eminent Jury which is presided over by a former Chief Justice of India. Nominations are sponsored by Rotary District Governors and other eminent personalities. Each year’s Award is focused on a different theme. The Trust has so far given fifteen Awards.

The sixteenth Rotary India Award, for the year 2007, was focused on “Street Children: Rehabilitation.” This has been bagged by Rtn. N.S. Manihara from Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) who is heading the Srikrishna Chaitanya Vidya Vihara Children’s Trust. The Award will be presented to him at a function in New Delhi on August 6, 2008.

This prestigious award needs to be promoted by all the District Governors and the clubs should be encouraged to lookout for people and institutions in their area who are doing yeoman service to humanity. When we come together in friendship with people who share our vision we build understanding and cooperation. The Rotary India Award shows the world that Service Above Self is more than just a motto. By recognising the good work of people we tell the world that these words are our truth that defines us and Rotary.

e-mail Scam Targeting Rotarians

There are several e-mail scams that target Rotarians.

Please be aware of the following scams:

An e-mail that claims that a Rotarian has "emerged a recipient of our Rotary International improvement Grant Programs." It goes on to say that the recipient was selected from an "exclusive" database of more than 800 million individuals and corporate bodies. The e-mail then gives a fake a batch number and contact information for a "cash prize."

Another scam e-mail claims that a deceased Rotarian has left money to the e-mail recipient to be donated to philanthropic efforts. The sender, who claims to be the executor of the will, then asks for the recipient’s personal information in order to claim the inheritance.

Another e-mail scam from a fake Rotary club claims that the recipient won a sum of US$ 700,000. The e-mail states that the winnings can't be transferred in the recipient's home country and that they must share an active bank account for deposit of "cash prize".

Rotary International does not solicit funds through e-mail, nor does it ask that personal information be updated by e-mail or other electronic means. RI encourages Rotarians and Rotary clubs to avoid becoming victims of such scams by deleting any e-mail that appears suspicious.

Membership growth encouraged, rewarded

“You can feel the excitement and energy in a growing Rotary club," says Michael McGovern, vice chair of the 2008-09 RI Membership Development and Retention Committee.

To help energize clubs worldwide, RI President Dong Kurn Lee is traveling the globe to generate ideas for membership growth. His first of 12 presidential conferences , which will include small-group discussions to identify best practices for member recruitment and retention, took place 7 July in Tokyo.

Conferences in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, and South Africa will also address child mortality, a top concern that lies at the heart of this year’s RI theme, Make Dreams Real .

To encourage clubs and districts to take action to increase membership, Lee has developed a new membership recognition program. During 2008-09, clubs that achieve a 10 percent net increase in membership will receive a certificate signed by the president.

At the district level, gaining two new clubs and a 10 percent net membership increase must be reached. District recognition awards vary depending on the percentage of clubs achieving the membership increase.

The 10 clubs and districts with the highest percentage net membership increase will be recognized on stage at the 2009 RI Convention in Birmingham, England. To ensure recognition, clubs should update membership information via Member Access by 15 May 2009. RI membership database numbers will be used to determine achievement.

"The goals can be achieved by any club or district that makes membership development a priority,"
